Naija News reported that the seven Polish nationals were taken into custody during a protest against bad governance in Kano State, which escalated into violence.
The group, arrested on August 6, was accused of displaying Russian flags during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Kano.
Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, announced their release on Wednesday via his X account, confirming that the Polish students and their teacher had been freed.
The individuals in question are students of African Studies at the Oriental Studies Faculty of the University of Warsaw.
They had arrived in Nigeria from Poland on August 1, with plans to return to their home country in early September.
Polish authorities criticized the arrests, stating that the students and their teacher were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They emphasized that the group was in Nigeria for academic purposes.
Following their release, Sikorski assured that the group would soon return to Poland.
He commented, “I would like to confirm that the young people are already free, back in Kano, on campus, with passports.
“I think the young people received an accelerated lesson in African studies… I hope they will be back in the country soon.”
