Spain clinched their first Olympic gold medal since Barcelona 1992 with a thrilling 5-3 victory over France in the men’s football final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The match was a rollercoaster, with France staging a dramatic comeback to level the game at 3-3 after regulation time. Maghnes Akliouche scored for France, and a late penalty by Jean-Philippe Mateta leveled the score, forcing the game into 30 minutes of extra time.
In the first half of extra time, Spain’s Sergio Camello scored twice, adding to Fermin Lopez’s two goals during regulation time. Lopez’s brace, combined with a stunning free kick from Alex Baena, had put Spain ahead 3-1 at halftime. France initially took the lead with a goal from Enzo Millot but struggled to contain Spain’s attacking prowess.
With the score tied at 3-3, Spain’s extra-time goals ensured a decisive victory and secured their place at the top of the Olympic podium. This win marks a historic achievement for Spain, returning them to the summit of Olympic football after over three decades.
On Thursday night, Morocco crushed Egypt 6-0 to win Bronze in Men’s Football at Paris 2024 Olympics.
