Duck broken as three Nigerian boxers seal passage to Paris 2024 Olympics

The Nigerian contingent to the African Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal, delivered an impressive showing as three of them excelled and booked their places in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

With Nigeria having failed to produce any boxer at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, there was huge pressure on the boxers to return the country to the Olympic games.

In the women’s 60kg, Cynthia Ogunsemilore was too good for her opponent, Algeria’s Khelif Hadjila, as she secured a unanimous decision victory. Ogunsemilore won the bout 5-0 to pick up the ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games.

In the men’s 57kg similarly, Joshua Omole Dolapo was a class above his Ethiopian opponent Leta Fikremariyam Yadesa. Omole won via unanimous decision after a 5-0 scoreline awarded by the judges. He booked his passage to the Olympics with his success.

In the men’s 92kg, Olaore Adams qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games with a split decision win over Algerian pugilist Houmri Mohamed.

The trio of Adams, Omole and Ogunsemilore will fly the Nigerian flag in Paris next summer in the boxing events of the Olympic Games.
