Lauren James apologises to Alozie for stamp
England star Lauren James has issued a public apology to Super Falcons ace Michelle Alozie following their clash in both sides’ Round of 16 match at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Chelsea forward James was arguably the revelation of the group stage, recording three goals and three assists as the Lionesses cruised to the last 16. The 21-year-old was touted to play a starring role against the Super Falcons, who were underdogs heading into the clash.
James failed to have the expected impact on the game, with her most telling moment coming in the 84th minute when she was dispossessed by the excellent Alozie for the umpteenth time after she attempted a dribble. Frustrated, she stood on the 26-year-old and was shown a yellow card by the referee. A VAR intervention saw the referee upgrade the yellow card to a straight red one, leaving the Lionesses with ten players.
England managed to keep Nigeria at bay over the remainder of normal time plus extra time before emerging with a 4-2 win on penalties.
In a tweet, Alozie revealed that she had no hard feelings towards James as the game was clearly an emotional one with great passion involved.
“Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world’s stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James”, she tweeted.
In response, James declared her respect for the versatile Houston Dash star and apologised for what transpired, stating that she had learned from the experience.
“All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened. Also, for our England fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience.”

James was expertly marshalled by Super Falcons midfielder Halimatu Ayinde throughout the clash, with the Chelsea ace limited to just 46 touches, no shots on target, no chances created and only two passes into the final third. She will likely play no further part in the tournament as she is expected to receive a three-match ban for her actions.
