NPFL: Remo Stars’ Player Makes Benin’s AFCON Squad, Bosso Hails Barau FC Fans

Remo Stars goalkeeper, Serge Obassa has been named in Benin Republic’s 30-man provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Serge Obassa, who has settled quickly since joining Remo Stars at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign, remains one of the trusted hands in the Cheetahs setup. He is listed alongside fellow goalkeepers Saturnin Allagbe and Dandjinou Marcel.

Head coach Gernot Rohr has also kept faith with several senior players as Benin chase a competitive outing at the continental showpiece. Captain Steve Mounie, Mohamed Tijani, Verdon Oliver, Djodel Dosou, Junior Olaitan and Tosin Aiyegun all made the initial cut.

Rohr is expected to reduce the squad to 25 next week as preparations shift to a training camp in Ben Slimane, Morocco, beginning Wednesday, December 10. Benin will compete in Group D with Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Botswana.

Meanwhile, Barau FC’s technical adviser, Ladan Bosso, has heaped praise on the club’s supporters after their dramatic 3-2 win over Kwara United at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

Barau FC, popularly known as the Maliya Boys, prevailed thanks to goals from Usman Maidubji, Muhammed Umar and Stanley Oganbor. Kwara United kept the contest alive through strikes from Johnmark Aule and Chibuzor Ogbodo.

The team now turns attention to a tricky trip to Maiduguri where they face El-Kanemi Warriors this weekend. Bosso said the fans played a huge role in last weekend’s result and insisted the team will tighten up defensively before the next outing.

“From the start of the game, my boys were hungry to get the win. You can also see the importance of the fans; they kept supporting and shouting when there was a problem, which we adhered to. It’s all in the process of how to get the team fired up,” Bosso told Barau’s media.

“Mistakes are inevitable, the goals we conceded aren’t a deliberate attempt. We will address the lapses before our next game against El-Kanemi Warriors.”
