Darkoo Reveals How Asake Ended Up on That Girl

Darkoo has opened up about the creative journey behind her hit collaboration with Asake, That Girl, revealing that the song was originally written with a South African global star in mind before the collaboration ultimately fell through.

Speaking to Billboard Africa, the British-Nigerian singer explained that despite releasing other records, she couldn’t let go of the track because of how strongly she believed in it.

“I dropped other records after that, but every time I listened back, I thought, ‘This song is mad.’ I couldn’t leave it behind.”

Determined to give the record a fresh direction, Darkoo decided to rework the song, making it bolder and more confident.

“I wanted to give it a different take, a little more confidence. A little more sexy.”

She then reached out to Asake, hoping he would bring a new dimension to the record. According to Darkoo, the collaboration came together surprisingly quickly.

“The next morning, I texted him (Asake), went back to sleep, woke up again and he’d sent me his number. Within two days, the verse was back.”

The revelation offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the duo’s standout collaborations came to life, highlighting both Darkoo‘s persistence and Asake‘s swift response in helping shape the final version of That Girl.
