The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, has announced a two-week suspension of academic activities following the death of a 200-level student who was killed by a speeding commercial vehicle on the Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State.
The victim was a student of LAUTECH’s Department of Agricultural Economics. Witnesses said the accident happened on Friday morning, prompting angry students to set the vehicle ablaze after the driver fled the scene.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, described the event as heartbreaking and said the decision to suspend academic activities was taken out of respect for the deceased and to allow the community to grieve.
“The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin,” Balogun said.
“This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
“In light of this grievous loss, and in recognition of the emotional toll it has taken on our students and staff, the university management has approved a two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin campus, effective immediately.”
Balogun added that students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources have been asked to proceed on a two-week break. Classes are expected to resume on Monday, November 24, 2025.
He also noted that officers on essential duties would be duly notified of their schedules during the suspension period, urging students to “remain safe, support one another, and honour the memory of their departed colleague.”
The news of the accident has thrown the university community into mourning, with many students calling for tighter safety measures along the Iseyin/Saki Road to prevent similar tragedies.
