Despite a 74-88 loss to the United States in the quarter-finals, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria have recommended D’Tigress for national honours.
Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, h received high praise from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for their impressive performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, praised the team’s achievements in a statement released by the association’s Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo. Benjamin emphasised that D’Tigress, who defeated top basketball teams like Australia and Canada, deserved recognition for their historic run.
Benjamin stated, “The Sporting Media both in Nigeria and globally have been following and analyzing the performance of our women’s basketball team. They have been exceptional, even before the Paris Olympics.”
He highlighted the team’s success, saying, “The team has conquered Africa by winning the Afrobasket tournament four times in a row, which is equivalent to the Africa Cup of Nations in football. Their last continental triumph was remarkable, especially since the team was assembled just weeks before the championship.”
Benjamin continued, “Their performance at the Olympics further proves their quality. Their resilience and passion on the court reflect our national values. In Paris, they broke records and became the first African basketball team—male or female—to reach the quarter-finals.”
He added, “Honoring these players with a Special Reception back in Nigeria would be fitting. It would recognize their hard work and motivate them for future competitions like the Basketball World Cup and other continental events.”
SWAN’s call for a special reception and national honors for D’Tigress highlights their commitment and significant achievements on the global stage.
